Only 20-30% of medicines consumed in sub-Saharan Africa are produced locally, meaning the continent still imports over 80% of its pharmaceutical and medical consumables. Despite this, the region’s estimated $14 billion pharmaceutical market relies heavily on imported drugs, which account for 70 to 90 percent of consumption. Medicines are the cornerstone of any healthcare system, and there is a critical need to enhance local production capabilities to ensure self-sufficiency and improved healthcare outcomes across the continent.
